2. Literature review2.1 Previous studies of metaphor Metaphor is a rhetorical term that uses one thing to metaphor another. Metaphor is the psychological, linguistic and cultural behavior of perceiving, experiencing, imagining, understanding and talking about such things under the hint of such things. Metaphor is a rhetorical device that is different from simile. It is not expressed by like or as, but by hidden comparison. Common expressions: A is B. There has been a debate between different schools on the definition and theory of metaphor. Cognitive linguistics divides metaphor into root metaphor and generative metaphor. On this basis, Lakoff and Johnson (1980) define generative metaphor as conceptual metaphor. Conceptual metaphors are divided into three categories: structural metaphors, positional metaphors and ontological metaphors. Many scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of research on metaphor. Zheng et al., (2020) pointed out that among the main types of metaphors, metaphor is the most interesting one, and the combination of metaphor and chat robot will produce unexpected effects. The application of metaphor in robot dialogue system can meet the emotional needs of users and make the conversation more attractive. Sun's(2017)analysis of foreign literature on metaphor translation shows that although the research has covered some fields and made great progress, most of it focuses on the traditional translation theory and literature, for example, metaphor translation in some famous poems or novels has a small number of fields related to people's life, and many topics have not been paid attention to. Therefore, further research is needed. In recent years, domestic scholars have also done a lot of research on metaphor translation. researchers (X.Y. Li, 2021) analyzed the metaphor translation of subtitles in the big bang of American drama life, and specifically evaluated the translation effect of relevant strategies according to the concept proposed by relevance theory, which has brought great help to subtitle translation of American drama in the future (N. Li, 2021).2.2 previous studies of relevance theory French scholar Sperber and British scholar Wilson (1986) put forward relevance theory in 1986. Sperber and Wilson (1986) hold that language communication is an ostensive inferential process and a cognitive process, which must be carried out by inferential thinking. Relevance theory is not based on rules and norms, but based on the following views: the speaker can have different understanding of the discourse, but he may not be able to understand the full meaning of the discourse in any situation; The hearer uses only one standard to understand the discourse, which can make him believe that the only understanding is relevance. Moreover, language communication is guided by the best relevance, and people's cognition is guided by the maximum relevance. Gutt (1911) applied relevance theory to translation studies. Cheng Oh has multiple pragmatic functions in specific contexts. In a word, it is necessary to study The Young Sheldon's metaphor subtitle translation from the perspective of relevance theory, which will be of great help to subtitle translation in the future.
2. 研究的基本内容、问题解决措施及方案
Relevance theory is a cognitive pragmatic theory. Proposed by Sperber and Wilson in Relevance: communication and cognition. Based on the concept of relevance and the principle of relevance, this paper analyzes the discourse theory in verbal communication. Relevance principle includes cognitive principle and communicative principle. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of Relevance Theory in American drama subtitles through the analysis of little Sheldon's subtitles. The author hopes to know whether little Sheldon's subtitles comply with the above two principles and whether they achieve the best relevance. Therefore, the research question of this paper is: does the subtitle of little Sheldon achieve the best relevance? If so, how can Chinese subtitles achieve the best relevance?Based on relevance theory, this paper mainly studies little Sheldon's subtitle translation. Obviously, this is a case study, focusing on text analysis. In this paper, the author selects some representative examples from each episode and compares Chinese and English subtitles. From the perspective of relevance theory, this paper analyzes the subtitles of American dramas to find out whether the best relevance is achieved between the character's language and the target language audience.
